Throughout the unit, students explored the water cycle, investigated why water conservation is important and researched ways to reduce water use. They then worked collaboratively to design creative solutions using Makers Empire, creating 3D prototypes to help our school save water.
Students confidently shared their thinking, explaining their designs and answering questions from visitors. Luis enjoyed “everyone’s comments and all the interesting questions,” while Etta loved “explaining my project to the visitors and they understood.” Jimmy also enjoyed “how people like mums and dads visited our station to have a look.”
We were delighted to welcome Jade from SA Water, who visited to view the students’ designs and provide valuable feedback. This authentic audience gave students the opportunity to communicate their ideas, receive feedback from an industry expert and see how their learning connects to real-world environmental challenges.
This inquiry brought together research, collaboration, problem solving, design and community connection, providing students with an authentic opportunity to share their learning while demonstrating creativity, confidence and care for our environment.

Simone – “At the showcase we presented our 3D printed designs about how to save water. What I liked most was sharing our ideas with others and Jade from SA Water.”
Zahra – “I liked the showcase because I liked showing people how my water-saving device worked and seeing people show interest in my design. My group and I enjoyed explaining how our design worked and how we made it.”
